Controversial South African rapper Riky Rick, who came under enormous flak for leaving out Cassper Nyovest’s name in his #CottonFest music festival, won the Metro FM Awards back in 2017 for which he gave an acceptance speech, part of which reads as follows:
“Shout out to all the kids that can’t get on radio, that can’t play their song on radio because they don’t have enough money. Shout out to all the kids that put out music videos that never get their music videos played on TV because they don’t have the money…”Riky Rick/ Instagram
The speech had elicited great backlash then, more so because, according to him, he had friends who were at that point in their careers. And some of them found the reference disrespectful. He may have said the right thing but at the wrong time.
Coming two years after, the apology is well taken, as most of those friends are no longer in the stations referenced in Riky Rick’s speech.
