It was a beautiful night. It was an ugly night. The beauty was in the performance by the lineup of stars for the Global Citizen Festival South. Ed Sheera, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Usher, , Sho Madjozi, Black Coffee, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage and others had given the audience a great time.
The ugly was in the chaos that followed immediately after the event: robberies, muggings, etc. before the event itself, the organizers kept potential attendees in the loop via the Global Citizen Festival social media pages.
But at the end of the event, it was clear the organizers had apparently not foreseen some of the security challenges that followed immediately the event broke up. With a crowd of over 60,000 people leaving at the same time, hoodlums moved in and robbed some attendees.
It was reported that the festival organizers had a deal with Uber to keep prices stable during and after the event. But the crowd was enormous and prices surged. Some attendees managed to pay the increased fare. Other just walked to the Sasol Garage on Nasrec Road, where they hoped to take public transport home.
At the garage, many were mugged, harassed and robbed. Gunshots split the air. There were even incidents of car heists. Although law enforcement agrnts were deployed to strategic locations at the stadium, they were nowhere to be found when the hoodlums moved in.
It had been a glorious but it has also been a painful night for many, as they now nurse deep wounds, both physical and psychological. The organizers should learn from this and ramp up security next time.
