Mzansi’s most famous record label – TS Records is closing down. The outfit co-owned by DJ Sbu and businessman-cum-politician Thembinkosi Nciza famously known as TK, has been hit after the duo severed business ties over irreconcilable differences.
It is alleged that DJ Sbu and TK have failed to submit their annual returns for more than five years. The consequence? TS Records will also now be deregistered by the South African Companies & Intellectual Property Commission.
To make matters worse, TK who used to be a director at energy drink company, MOFAYA, owned by DJ Sbu is also resigning his position. This brings to an end a business partnership spanning over 15 years.
TK Records used to be the powerhouse of kwaito, Afro-pop and commercial house music. So successful was the brand that it was regarded as the most successful black story. However, some of their top artistes started a mass exodus from the imprint and its demise was just inevitable.
DJ Sbu confirmed he has not been active with TK Records for a while and that TK is also taking a break to concentrate on his political career. In his words:
“I can confirm that I have not been active in TS Records business affairs for while but it was not because TK and I fought. We are still OK as brothers. It’s just that he wanted to concentrate on his political career and grow his other business ventures and I also wanted to concentrate on growing MOFAYA,”
Some of the top artists that previously belonged to TS Records include the late Brown Dash, Brickz, Ntando, Prokid and Mzekezeke.
