The second half of the year will be Wizkid’s chance to release the album, and get his current status backed by a body of work to mark time.
This year, Wizkid is Africa’s leading light, shining brighter than the stars from all the other countries. The Nigerian pop singer is currently celebrated across continents, with the music powering his push to domination.
The singer is currently vying for the award of most travelled African star is currently in the US, where he is wrapping up work for his forthcoming LP. Last week, he was touring Europe in the company of Chris Brown, and then he shot through to the Dominican Republic, to record and shoot a video with Tinie Tempah, titled ‘Mamacita’. This week has him ‘vibing’ with French Montana, Justine Skye, and producer, Diplo.
Wizkid’s quest for a new LP is what has powered his year so far. His previous body of work, “Ayo (Joy)” which gave him the reins of his career, and completely cut him from the Banky W-led Empire States Entertainment. Since then Wizkid has grown exponentially, becoming the biggest musician on the continent. Via countless hits at home, and international collaborations, the singer has kept his push for global domination alive, and it has begun to pay dividends for his music. This year saw him collaborate with Drake on a chart-topping hit song, and the floodgates have become open.
Wizkid’s forthcoming album is scheduled to come out this year, with the singer working around the globe to produce an African classic. After ruling Nigeria with his debut album, his sophomore gathered polarizing reviews, with many enthusiasts tearing down the work as a project without substance. Wizkid has grown from that man with new connections, better access to more diverse sounds, and ultimately, a more rounded influence. These influences have come from collaborations across continents.
With the dynamic of Nigerian music working at overdrive this year, we have seen the entrance of a number of international players, working closely with Nigerians for profit. Davido has Sony Music on his case, Tiwa Savage and Roc Nation just got into business, Ayo Jay is now growing at RCA, and many more are still to come.
Wizkid has stayed away from organizational discussions, with each new day giving everybody a reason to anticipate new music. The collaboration list for the project already reads like a World A-Team from different continents. Anticipation is currently fever-high, with his teaser tracks going on to be almost instant hits. There are projections that the singer’s album will be a diverse work, balancing his growth in status, with the added sonic requirements of different countries. The prospect of Wizkid, experimenting with new influences and syncopations, is a giddying prospect. After continuously being derided by critics for his lack of content, he has toured the world, hooked up with the right producers and worked on his game. What could be hotter than that this year?
The year 2016 has reached its mid-point, and Wizkid still maintains his leadership of the African space. The second half of the year will be his chance to release the album, and get his current status backed by a body of work to mark time. That album is the most anticipated.
