SAMA 2019: The Night, the list of Winners, and Everything in Between

Source: / Instagram

The South Africa Music Awards 2019 edition is over, but memories of it may not be just yet. The glitter and the glamour, the banter and the laughter, the hugs and the smiles, the wins and the losses will find living spaces in the memories of many for a long time to come.

Nominee lists as we know them are usually long things. They contrast sharply with the winners’ list, where only a few get listed. The SAMA 2019 nominee list was no different. It was a lengthy affair comprising some of the finest names in South African music. You already know of the length of the winners’ list of course.

The South Africa Music Awards is in its 25th year, so this year’s award goes by the hashtag #SAMA25. Held at the Sun City Resort, the first night of this year’s event was not broadcast live, but some attendees did freeze that moment in history in a couple of snaps and videos shared on social media.

#SAMA25 held in two nights, with Hulisani Ravele compèring. The first night was starved of guests, with Simmy performing to an almost empty room. Apparently most of the A-list artistes stayed away the first night, electing instead, to attend “Jika” mastermind AKA’s beano.

For instance, and DJ who scooped some awards at the award night, were not there in person to accept them. ’s “Fill Up Orlando Stadium” took the scudetto for the Best Live Audio Visual Recording and ’s, David Guetta’s and Delilah Montagu’s collaborative single “Drive” won the trophy for Best Collaboration. (By the way, the same song had won the Clubbing TV award earlier).

However, in a move that surprised many, Lindelani Mkhize and Jabu Hlongwane were on hand to accept their awards.

The second night of the award probably carried the most charm, as it wasn’t as starved of guests as the first. The stars were there – most of them anyway – and the performance was electrifying.

It wasn’t all about the winners, though, as some celebrities simply turned up for the event. “Smogolo” mastermind rocked the red carpet with his son, a splendid spectacle that had many smiling. Kelly Khumalo was there as well and shared a cozy moment with former flame Chad Da Don

It will be a night forever embedded in the memories of most attendees

#SAMA25 is over. For those who did not win, it is back to work; for those who did win, it is steroidal incentive to work even harder. Either way, both winners and “losers” win. It is also a big win for South African music and the music industry as a whole.

Like the winners’ list of past editions of the SAMA, the current might come under some criticism, but it would not deflect the obvious, which is that the South Africa Music Awards – or the SAMAs, if you please – has become one of the most prestigious awards in South Africa and will probably retain the prestige for a long time to come.
