Nigerian disc jockey “DJ Obi” almost on his way to a new World Record

DJ Obi is on the verge of something monumental.

One of Nigeria’s foremost DJ’, Obi is currently attempting to break the Guinness World Record for Longest DJ Set. The ten-day set which began from 10 p.m, June 22nd, will run through 10 p.m. on July 1st, 2016.

The current record for Longest DJ Set is 200 hours and was set on November 19, 2014 in Dublin, Ireland. DJ Obi attempts to make history with a continuous 240 hour set at Sao Café located in Lekki Phase One.

It has not been easy so far, just like all good things. After DJ Obi’s team put the finishing details on the technical aspects, a short video from the Guinness World Record’s team and a short prayer (we all know everything we Nigerians do must be put in prayer!) Obi kicked off minute-one of his 240hours at 11:30pm. Opening to a packed house, he mixed mostly House music from different countries, which was more than enough to keep the crowd moving. Don Jazzy, , Dr Sid and Omawunmi were among the friends, family, fans and supporters who came out to encourage the DJ on his first day of ten.

The days have gone by, and a long list of supporters from all over the music industry and beyond have shown up to capture the magic and give strength to the man. From interacting with his music, to dancing and entertaining him, there has been a long string of people urging him on.

DJ Spinall, , Tiwa Savage, Praiz, , , , , M.I, , , Dremo, Mayorkun, Timaya, Nkiru Anumudu, Godwin Tom, , , Shaydee, , Sammie, , and many more have shown support at many points through his journey so far.

But it hasn’t always been easy. Sleep, which is an essential for the health of his mind and body has been lacking, and of course, iot has taken its toll. There have been reports of hallucination, overwhelming fatigue, and distractions. Prayer has been offered, his feet are periodically been massaged and his feeding is regulated.

By 6am on July 1, 2016, he would have equalled the World Record of 200hrs held by DJ Norberto Loco of Poland. , and by the time the clock strikes 7am, Obi Ajuonoma, would have successfully set a new Guinness World Record of 201 hours, for longest DJ set in the world. There would still be 39 more hours for him to extend that record, and reach a personal and world best of 240 hours.
