Black Coffee, Sho Madjozi, Sjava and others in SAMA Nominee List: Facts, Stats, Possibilities…

An idea that began 25 years ago, with many not taking it too seriously back then, has today morphed into one of the most prestigious awards in South Africa, with entertainers scrambling for nomination slots.

That is the South African Music Awards (SAMA) for you. And yes the award is a quarter of a century old and one of the most coveted. The year’s event – the 25th SAMA – is billed for Alberton, Johannesburg, the same place the award began 25 years ago.

It would be more like a homecoming for the event and its organizers, a walk through memory’s didactic gates. It is not in doubt that this is one walk that will be relished and for a long time too. There are many reasons for this, of course.

On is that the award – contrary to the expectations of some peeps at the outset – has not flopped. It has rather become one of the biggest music awards in South Africa. You may say Southern Africa. And if you have won a SAMA your art probably means something.

The SAMA is awarded in over a dozen categories, including Male Artist of he Year, Female Artist of the Year, Duo/ Group of the Year, Album of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Best Jazz Album, Best pop Album. Best Live Audio Visual recording and Best Maskandi Album.

Other categories are Best Afro Pop  Album, Best Reggae Album, Hest Hip hop Album, Best Dance Album, Best African Adult Contemporary Album, Best Kwaito/Gqom/Amapiano, Best Traditional Album and Best African Indigenous Faith Album. The list is by no means comprehensive.

The nominee list for this year’s SAMA has just been announced. The list spots the cream of South African musical stars, with leading the pack with five nominations, proving once again that he is one of the kings on the music scene in South Africa.

Following fiercely behind are artistes like , , and Dikana. They all have four nominations each.

Other nominees on the list are , Anatii, Nicksoul, Busiswa, Distruction Boyz, DJ Maphorisa, Jeremy loops, Sannie Fox, Ard Matthews, Georgetown, DJ Capital, Prince Kaybee, Vilakazi, Zakes Bantwini, and Mlindo the Vocalist.

Apparently the nominee list covers artistes of every stripe, skill and persuasion. It may be thought of as all inclusive, with honour beads potentially waiting for whoever would receive.

For those with nomination in just one category the chances of winning may be slim indeed, unlike those with nominations in four, five categories. To this end it might be said that the SAMA 2019 award night might ultimately belong to Black Coffee. With nominations in five categories, including Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, he stands a chance of at least going home with two award plaques.

Black Coffee’s nomination is one that has been greeted with open joy and approval. He is probably South Africa’s number one disc jockey right now, highly revered and in high demand around the world.

He was part of the lineup for the Global citizen festival in 2018 and immediately after the global event received an invitation to a private party by Beyonce and Jay Z. He began 2019 with two international gigs.

Need one say he has won the International DJ Awards at Ibiza three years in a row? Need one also add that Portuguese football star Christiano Ronaldo was jamming to a song of Black Coffee’s the other day?

For who has got several hits to her name including the album “Limpopo Champions League,” a four-category nomination is no big deal. She is one outstanding songstress who has worked with some of the big names on the global stage. In fact, as we had observed earlier, she is a music jewel in the sun.

The 25th SAMA is scheduled to take place June 1 2019 in Sun City. It might turn out a night of many surprises, with favourites either not winning anything or falling short of expected wins. Either way, it is going to be a revealing night. Already, South Africa can’t wait.
