He election season is upon South Africa already, with each political party scheming on how to succeed at the pools. For the ruling African National Congress (ANC), the scheming is on how to retain power, and for the others it is how to grab power from the ANC.
The ANC isn’t resting on its past victory, though. The party has been in the vanguard of mobilizing the people to vote it back to power, using whatever legit means it could think of, including music.
The party has released theme songs like “Nkulunkulu Thuma Mina” (Ft. Mark Khoza, ThackzinDJ, DJ Paper707, DJ Bat & Renaldo) and “Thuma Mina” (in collaboration with DJ Vetkuk vs Mahoota Ft. Leehleza) to reinforce its campaign.
The other political parties are not napping, though, not least the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighter) headed by the controversial Julius Malema.
While it seems the likes of Mark Khoza, ThackzinDJ, DJ Paper707, DJ Bat, Renaldo, DJ Vetkuk vs Mahoota and Leehleza have endorsed the ANC, having featured on theme songs for the party, Julius Malema has got robust support from the music industry as well, even internationally.
Nigerian afro-pop artiste Davido has thrown his weight behind the EFF, describing his as capable of making a great leader. He also wished South Africans safety as they go to the pools.
Davido’s post reads: “Good luck On the 8th of May Sir 🇿🇦 !! WE ALL KNOW YOU WILL MAKE A GREAT LEADER !! TO MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN SOUTH AFRICA, BE SAFE AS YOU GO OUT AND MAKE YOUR CHOICE ❤️❤️🇿🇦🇿🇦 #VoteEFF #MALEMA.”
Davido’s post elicited controversy in the comment section. The comments was split between those who supported his position and those who thought he was divorced from the political reality in South Africa. Among Davido’s backers are the celebs Babalwa Mneno and Ntando Duma.
Davido is no newbie in political interventions. He was in the vanguard of his uncle’s campaign. And when his uncle was rigged out, he fought until the election petition tribunal restored his uncle’s mandate as the governor-elect of Osun state.
It remains to be seen if Davido’s affirmation of Julius Malema’s leadership skills and his suitability for the South African people would translate to massive votes for the EFF and eventual victory at the pools.
What do you make of Davido’s endorsement? You might wish to join the conversation by dropping your thoughts in the comment section.
