Mzansi seems to have stepped into judgment day – the judgement day of homophobes or old homophobes or whatever you choose to call them.
Singer Nadia Nakai recently apologized when homophobic tweets she made in 2010 resurfaced this year and Twitter’s restless army lobbed grenades at her.
Now it seems to be the turn of “Wuz Dat” crooner, television personality and the new muso in town Boity Thulo.
Interestingly, the year of her tweet coincide with Nadia Nakai’s. In a series of tweets, Boity had complained about “gay sh*t” on soapies and had referred to a gay man as a “fascinating thing.”
But she has now taken back her earlier words, describing them as products of immaturity: “A decade ago, I was naive, homophobic, young and didn’t know better. I was 19 and my views on sexuality were warped. We grow, our views change and we do better.”
For those who felt offended by het tweets, she said she is sorry.
She also insists she was no longer the same person: “It’s gut wrenching and embarrassing to see them now however I am not the same person I was 10 years ago.”
Her apology split her fans into factions. You can determine what faction they belong in from the screenshots below.
It is a good thing to see her own up to an error of a decade ago. Let the music train move on. Mzansi cannot afford to stagnate musically
