Competitions are great as they push us to the limits and ignite passion. However, one thing which we absolutely do not enjoy about competitions is the fact that a winner must emerge from the pool of terrific talent. Do you remember Olamido Baddoo’s ‘Who You Epp’ Competition?
Once ‘Who You Epp’ dropped, it quickly became a smashing sensation, shutting down the airwaves and social gigs. Interestingly, with Olamide’s call-to-action asking anyone to record a freestyle over the additional 16 bars on the jam, the ‘Who You Epp’ Competition quickly became a movement – featuring top acts and heavyweights such as Wande Coal, Phyno, Lil Kesh, Rugged Man, Toby Grey, Stanley Enow etc.
Then, the YBNL boss stated that the competition was a way of giving upcoming artistes a shot at fame, success and stardom. Not surprisingly though, as the winner will be given a free collaboration with the YBNL boss, a free beat instrumental paid for by Olamide, and a video which will be shot by prolific director Mr Moe Musa.
Guess what? ‘The Who You Epp?’ competition has finally drawn to a close with over 2000 submissions. However, the grand finale blessed us with two winners instead of one and a terrific ‘Who You Epp?’ cypher featuring the top 5 MCs.
Boy! I think we’ve got a new set of talented lyrical marksmen on the block and they all totally slayed with their flows that you’d uggest this Cypher should be reserved in a dedicated hall of fame. First off with an ibile vibe was Trod, whose style mimics that of the late lyrical were, Dagrin.
Not done with the ibile style, Scripts jumped on the bars to finish off the slaughter where Trod left off. Then it was the turn of lyrical craftsman, Maupheen who held nothing back as he dropped a hail of bullets on the jam.
Delis and Drew came afterwards and to be honest, each man did epic justice on the ‘Who You Epp’ cypher. In fact, we feel sad for Olamide and the fellow judges, which included legendary Disc Jockey, DJ Jimmy Jat, because making a decision on one winner must have been a torture.
At the end of the day, two winners emerged in Maupheen and Delis and they both have won the opportunity to feature Olamide on a song titled ‘Lies People Tell’ along with a video which drops next week Monday.
Whew! What a great way to end the ‘Who You Epp’ campaign – it has truly been a blast!
