It might be safe to assume that you currently live on another planet if you haven’t heard Olamide Baddo’s rave of the moment hit ‘Who you epp’. Consequent upon the successful release of his first single of the year, ‘Abule Sowo’, this latest effort from the YBNL boss can arguably be said to be the most disruptive material on the Nigerian, and in fact the African music scene currently.
It is no news that Olamide has for years been on top of his game with his own lyrical prowess, marketing strategies for his craft, collaborations with the crème de la crème of the industry, and discovery of amazing talents, for which he has recorded tremendous album sale and numerous awards to show for his efforts.
However, with ‘Who you epp’, which literally translates to ‘who have you helped in English, Olamide has managed to raise his own bar to nothing short of legendary status; not solely because of the content of the material, but even more because of the hype, noise and buzz surrounding this latest banger.
The ‘bobo’ crooner has thrown down the gauntlet for this single with a competition challenging anyone to record a freestyle over the free 16 bars left on the Shizzi produced ‘Who you epp’ track. Participants are then expected to send the link to firstname.lastname@example.org before the submission entries closes on April 15.From left: Olamide and Shizzi
Baddo who already has a history, knack and penchant of turning unknown acts into world-beaters in the industry such as Lil’ Kesh, Adekunle Gold and Chinko Ekun to mention a few, stated that this competition is another way of giving upcoming artistes a shot at fame, success and stardom. Not surprisingly though as the winner will be given a free collaboration with the YBNL boss, a free beat instrumental paid for by Olamide, and a video which will be shot by prolific director Mr Moe Musa.
Not minding this fact, however, this competition has become a viral hit with celebrity rappers picking up Olamide’s gauntlet and jumping into the fray with their own twists, thus, further establishing ‘Who you epp’ as currently the hit with the most buzzing activity on the music scene. Ruggedman, Phyno, Reminisce and Lil Kesh are some of the celebrity rappers who have responded to Olamide’s call to action.
Therefore, it will be safe to state that Olamide who started the year out in controversy on the back of the beef with Don Jazzy at the Headies Award, which was eventually settled by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote has laid a solid stake on the list of the top players and shakers in the Nigerian music industry, 2016.
Asides the successful release of ‘Abule Sowo’, the current wave-making ‘Who you epp’ and its viral competition, Olamide’s latest edition of his ‘Olamide Live in Concert’ just recently held at a sold out Amazura Hall, Jamaica, Queens, New York.
Do you think Olamide will go on to even beat the standard and bar he’s already set himself this year or would you also jump on the viral ‘Who you epp’ competition? Please leave your thoughts, comments and suggestions in the comment section below.
