Kwesta‘s third studio album titled “DaKAR II” has proven to be to musical gem. In celebration of this project of musical art going platinum, we bring you an offering of the smash effort that has captivated the entire South African music industry.
It is no longer news that Kwesta whose real name is Senzo Mfundo Vilakazi scored a feat of 6 awards at the recently held South African Music Awards. In fact, such was the quality of the “DaKAR II” album that Kwesta had already referred to it as his best work yet.
Little reason many industry watchers declared after the SAMAs that the event should just have been named the Kwesta Music Awards. As a matter of fact, the “DaKAR II” album was the golden pass that made it possible for him to become the most decorated hip hop act in the history of the SAMAs.
The “DaKAR II” album wasn’t just hurriedly cooked; Kwesta had started work on this project as far back as 2013. The project began on the heels of the first “DaKAR I” album which proved to be a success. That project was preceded by Kwesta’s debut album titled “Special Rekwest”.
However, “DaKAR II” album is of a different mould. In a world where artists are comfortable enough with just a few songs on an album, Kwesta made this a whopping 2 discs of quality music. This is why the songs off this project has gone on to colonize charts and set Kwesta on the path of greatness.
The “DaKAR II” album was finally released on February 26, 2016, by Urbantainment, under exclusive license to Sony Music Entertainment Africa. It featured such masterclass scorchers including “Day One”, “Mayibabo“, “Ngiyaz’fela Ngawe“ which featured Thabsie, “Ngud“ which featured Cassper Nyovest as well as several others.
The album features such heavyweights in the game including Cassper Nyovest, AKA, DJ Maphorisa, Tellaman, Yanga, Kid X, OkMalumKoolKat, DJ Bucks, Tweezy and a host of other A-listers.
Kwesta says of the album that he was simply enjoying himself as an artist. Now, the end result is all too glaring as the decade-long hard work and sacrifices of his career is finally being rewarded.
The “DaKAR II”album has now gone platinum, “Ngud” has gone 5 times platinum while its music video has passed 4 million views on YouTube, and the music video for “Ngiyaz’fela Ngawe” has surpassed 2 million views on the same platform.
The “DaKAR II” album continues to make waves and it is left to be seen the further heights this project leads Kwesta on. However, the great news is that he is now working on a 4th studio album and that promises to seal his status as one of the best there ever was.
