Still basking in his successes as the first African to sign a deal with Sony BMG Music Entertainment, his Pepsi endorsement said to be worth around 100 million naira and also the wave-making single release of his protégé, Mayorkun, it is safe to assert that Omo Baba Olowo (O.B.O), Davido is on a roll this year, 2016.
Unfortunately, his roll hasn’t been limited to successes alone as he’s had his fair share of controversies. From his latest beef with his cousin, B-Red, over the success of Mayorkun’s single release, Eleko, to the carryover from 2015 of the rancour and drama with his baby mama, Sophia Momodu and her uncle, Ovation publisher, Dele Momodu.
Heck, Davido even got a lot of social media stick for posing with and shooting a police rifle from the balcony of his mansion, in addition to saying he needed to move mansions since people were always coming to beg for money in his house. However, all those don’t matter to us and the only thing that matters is the music and he’s not disappointing on that front.
The HKN Gang Co-Owner and Dami Duro crooner has just released another single which is most likely going to be the final track of his much awaited album release on the stables of Sony BMG. This latest club banger is titled Chillin and it features Runtown as well as multi award and platinum international artiste, Akon. We believe this latest collaboration with Akon, his second after Dami Duro remix, is mainly geared towards making his album appeal to a global audience consequent upon the Sony deal.
With Davido, Akon and Runtown on a track, you can’t but expect a classic and expectedly, Chillin failed to disappoint. This effort is simply a party track and club banger. It will simply make you put on the dancing shoes and rock. However, that’s all the song offers and like many dance tunes, it doesn’t carry a lot of valuable message (well, all work and no play…).
Chillin reflects the Hip Hop culture of bad guys, clubbing, partying, girls, money cars and influence. However, it offers world-class and top notch sounds and beats and we can only hope for even more international collaborations such as this one since it will only further aid the ever developing potentials of the Nigerian music industry.
Akon for example is an international artiste, who has conquered the world, won several awards, sold millions of records and has worked with some of the finest and the best on the global stage. The Nigerian music industry will gain massively should only a quarter of this trail rub off on our very own O.B.O – after all, both are African Americans, born in the US and spent a chunk of their growing up years in West Africa.
As we leave Chillin to the judgement and assessment of music lovers and critics, let’s just hope for more successes from Davido this year, which we are hoping will include the successful release of his third album.
