Wizkid Becomes First African Artist To Hit 8m Monthly Listeners On Spotify

Wizkid hits 8m monthly Spotify listeners, breaks record for the most among African artists.

Nigerian artists keep making the nation proud in their various little ways. 2019 has seen many Nigerian artists break records with their music and videos, and even expand their fan territories with beautiful collaborations with artists in the international market. Ayodeji  “Wizkid” Balogun who made the news as one of many African artists featured on the Beyoncé curated Lion King album, The Gift is at it again, making headlines with a newly achieved feat.

The singer has broken the record for the most monthly listeners on Spotify. The record was  previously held by Congolese rapper and singer, Maitre Gims, who had a record seven million monthly listeners, Wizkid now surpasses him with 8 million monthly streams on the platform. Wizkid reportedly had 6.9 million listeners a few days ago before surging to 8 million.

This was aided by his added popularity off the Brown Skin Girl track, his recent song, Like with British-Ghanaian rapper and singer, Kojo Funds, and his collaboration, Dis Love with DJ Spinal and Tiwa Savage.

Wizkid is no stranger to breaking records, the afro pop singer and songwriter became the first artist to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart as a featured artist when Drake‘s one dance hit number. He also became the first African artist to walk the runway at the Dolce and Gabbana Fashion show while his song, ‘Soco‘ played in the background. In 2018, Wizkid became the first African artist to sell out Skyway Theatre.
