Who is Betsy Ross And The First American Flag

Did Betsy Ross sew the first American flag? That’s the question on everyone’s lip. Same question that has surprisingly been answered by many but still keeps coming.

Then again, why is everyone asking now?

According to new reports, Nike‘s previous plan to distribute the Air Max 1 Quick Strike on the fourth of July (the independence day of The United States of America) has been scrapped. This is due to present criticism of the shoes by former NFL star Colin Kaepernick who slammed the featured flag on the shoes.

The Air Max 1 Quick Strike features an image of the first ever American flag containing 13 stars on the heels. The 13 stars represent the 13 states in the United States at the time.

Colin voiced his distaste, saying he and others had found the shoe offensive because of its ties to America’s era of slavery.

Following this, Nike cancelled the release of the shoes that featured the ‘Besty Ross‘ designed flag. They said quote; “it could unintentionally offend and detract from the nation’s patriotic holiday.”

Believed to have designed the 13-starred flag, Betsy Ross is America’s most famous tailor. Rumour has it that she was personally asked by Gen. George Washington to design the nation’s first flag.

This has been the story every American has known growing up, yet many have argued this fact. One of those include Author of “Flag: An American Biography” Marc Leepson who has called the story more fable than fact.

Ross‘ grandson William Canby begs to differ. In a paper titled “The History on the Flag of the United States”, he tells the story of how his grandmother had been asked to create the nation’s first flag. This she finally did after much planning and deliberation.
