2019 BMI Awards Honor R&B icon Brandy

American singer-songwriter and actress, Brandy has received the Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) President’s Award in recognition of her evergreen hits – which have given her place in R&B history, and also for her meaningful impact on the entertainment industry.

BMI is as one of four United States performing rights organizations and has advocated for songwriters, music publishers, composers in more than 78 years. The group recently held its 2019 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards at the Sandy Springs Arts Center in Atlanta, celebrating the songwriters, producers and publishers of 2018’s most-performed R&B/hip-hop songs.

The event, which was hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President, Creative, Atlanta, Catherine Brewton, kicked off with a moving tribute video in honour of the late Nipsey Hussle to celebrate his notable philanthropic work and musical legacy. It also included stellar performances by some of the hottest artists on the music scene.

Brandy Rayana Norwood, known professionally by her mononym Brandy, received a series of special tributes, starting with Jade Novah performing a beautiful rendition of Brandy’s 2004-released “Talk About Our Love.”

Singer-songwriter, Samoht also delivered a stripped-down version of the singer’s 1995 “Brokenhearted,” with follow-up performance by gospel singer Kierra Sheard, who gave a sultry rendition of two of Brandy’s ballads, “Have You Ever” and “He Is.” The tributes were ended by Eric Bellinger‘s performance of “Baby” and “Nothing” with the audience singing along.

Before Brandy was presented with the BMI President’s Award, her brother, Ray J, mount the stage to serenade the 40-year-old star with her song “Best Friend”.

The multiple-award-winning singer received accolades with an impromptu performance, encouraged by the audience, of “I Wanna Be Down,” and her iconic hit “Almost Doesn’t Count.”

Receiving the 2019 BMI President’s Award lists Brandy with previous recipients of the same Curtis Mayfield, Toni Braxton, Will.i.am, and Ludacris among others.
